History of the Waihi Beach Dirt Track Club
How it all started.
Way back around 1996/7 three guys, Dennis Boyd, Terry Dalton, & Travis Kingsford noticed the growing area of dirt up in the hills behind the Waihi Beach Quarry where workers had been dumping the scalpings from the Quarry (which was operated by Cedric Mathers at the time).
They decided to do a bit of extra earth works themselves and levelled out an area to form a rough race track, and did a “few” laps in their cars.
It followed that one Friday night after work they invited a few friends to come and have a bit of fun in their cars as well. This activity carried on and the invitations grew as time went by.
Of course, they had gained permission, and much help, from the Brown Family (who owned the land).
In due course they went out and got sponsorship from such businesses as; Waihi Earthmovers, The Commercial Hotel, Chris Mullin Contracting, Edwards Transport, Kelly Dean Contracting, Porter Engineering, Waihi Mitre 10, Goldfields Auto Electrical, Carters Contractors, and Waihi Tyre Services.
It should be noted, that if it were not for all these businesses, plus much help from many others, the track would not have had the chance to grow to what it is today. Many thanks to them all!
Eventually the Waihi Beach Dirt Track Club (Inc) was formed.
And as the years went by, a better pit area was created and the track was enlarged, modified and improved. Safety barriers & fences were installed. A grader, a water truck, and tow tractor were all obtained.
The original tin shed was eventually replaced with proper club rooms with electricity! And, a licensed bar. Compressed air & water lines were installed in the pits, and so were fire extinguishers and First Aid kits. Public toilets were installed in order to get resource consent for the public to enter.
Club rules and race rules were introduced, and a points system was adopted to which trophies are awarded at the end of each season.
